Making real money in business is leveraging your relationships with others for win-win outcomes. But, the only way you can do this is if you have a system that can be repeated by others so they can leverage relationships for the win-win outcome. Wealth depends on leverage and systems – not just you.
When you buy a franchise all you are doing is buying a job, the franchisor is leveraging their system with you as the employee. What you need is to be the franchisor, the one who has the system that can make you and others money now and in the future. First I’ll tell you my story and then you need to tell me yours. I’m over 60 plus (60+), a survivor of two plane crashes (I was the pilot), a husband of over 40 years with 2 children and 4 grandchildren. I’ve tried about every way there is to make money. Some ventures have worked and some have not, but in every case I got just as bored moving on to the next venture with equal interest and enthusiasm. As we speak Dawn, my wife, and I are classified in the top 1% of the population with a net worth in the millions. I should retire, but that is real boring. At this point in my life my enjoyment comes from helping others achieve their dreams, my grandchildren, children, friends and you if you have what it takes to be successful. Let me share with you some of my observations about being successful.
First and foremost we need to have a vision of what our successes look like so we can see where we’re going.

My first vision as a boy was to be like my Dad, a professional military man. At age 22 I graduated from college as a Distinguished Military Graduate and went on active duty. After six months I realized that the military was not for me and I charted a course to exit with my MBA so I could get a civilian job – which I accomplished three years later.

My next success vision was to become a recognized marketing expert like those people who gave lunch talks at conferences. This effort required 12 years, the writing of two books and many minor level presentations to make the national stage.

My current vision is to be successful and sleep in my own bed each night (no travel). The trouble with the national stage (which became international) is that all your successes are somewhere away from your home. After 20 plus years of jetting hither and yon every week I had enough. So here we are succeeding from home. Once you have a vision of what your successes look like, sear them in your mind’s eye so you keep your attitude in line with your vision.
Second we need to be open to change. If we cannot achieve our visions doing what we’re currently doing we are going to have to change what we are doing. There are many clichés about change like “you can’t get to second base without leaving first base” which is all well and good for a baseball player, but we can’t afford to be thrown out at second, we don’t get another at bat. The change you need to embrace is more gradual, test something new, adopt what works and move forward. A better change metaphor is to be like Tarzan and “never let go of the vine you have until you have a firm grasp on the next vine” so do what is working until you find something that works better. This type of change is gradual, we hardly notice.
Finally we need to be willing to work to achieve our visions. Work not just in the physical sense but also in the mental arena. Our change is going to first be in our minds and then in our behaviors.
